Catalogue Note

The poppy is a quintessential Mughal motif. It is adopted in a multitude of media from border illumination to textiles, enamels and glass (Skelton 1982, p.43, no.57,p.89, no.226, p.105, no.327, p.125, no.387, respectively). The purpose of the tray is not entirely certain but a footed tray of a similar form and size in silver filigree forms part of a dressing table set in the Clive Collection at Powis Castle (Powis 1987, p.115 and p.127, no.188).
