Emmy Roth, 1885-1942

Emmy Roth est une figure énigmatique du design du XXe siècle, avant tout une orfèvre moderniste reconnue internationalement. Née à Hattigen en Allemagne le 12 mai 1885, apprentie chez l'orfèvre Conrad Anton Bleumers à Düsseldorf vers 1908, elle se forme dans les traditions du Werkbund. En 1916 elle s'établie à son compte à Berlin-Charlottenburg jusqu'à la montée du Mouvement National Socialiste de 1933. Juive de nationalité, elle se réfugie en France puis au Pays-Bas avant de s'installer à Tel Aviv en 1935. Elle expose au Pavillon Israélien de l'Exposition Universelle de 1937 à Paris.

Emmy Roth is an elusive figure of 20th century design but was an internationally respected modernist silversmith. Born in Hattigen, Germany May 12, 1885, she was trained in the werkbund traditions of Germany and was apprenticed to the silversmith Conrad Anton Beumers in Düsseldorf around 1908. By 1916 she had established her own workshop in Berlin-Charlottenburg and enjoyed a steady patronage until the rise of the National Socialists in 1933.  As a Jewish artist she was forced to flee and worked for a period in France and the Netherlands before settling permanently in Tel Aviv in 1935, and exhibited in the Israeli pavilion of the 1937 Paris World Exhibition.
