Condition

Six small chips and flakes to the border rim, the longest 7 mm, minor firing imperfections and a glaze gap (4 x 2 mm) to the outside, iron spots, firing faults and two star cracklings to the glaze inside.

Catalogue Note

This bowl belongs to a group of Ming-inspired biscuit wares enamelled with green dragons in pursuit of flaming pearls. Compare a pear-shape vase decorated with a similar scene in green enamel included in the Special Exhibition of Dragon-Motif Porcelain in the National Palace Museum, National Palace Museum, Taipei, 1983, cat. no. 88; a meiping vase from the H.M. Knight collection, sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 21st May 1980, lot 212; and another sold twice in our Hong Kong rooms, 23rd May 1978, lot 167, and 17th May 1988, lot 108, and again at Christie's New York, 26th March 2010, lot 1393. A pear-shape vase painted with an aubergine and a green dragon chasing yellow and blue-enamelled flaming pearls, with an apocryphal Chenghua reign mark, was sold in our London rooms, 8th June 1993, lot 84.
