Description

composés d'une base en forme de cloche, d'une tige annelée, cette dernière supportant une coupe circulaire au centre de laquelle s'élève un mât conique supportant la bobèche, le décor sur fond turquoise formé de rinceaux feuillagés et lotus, alternant avec les Huit Objets Précieux Bajixiang, les bordures agrémentées de guirlandes de fleurs ou de ruyi, le pied rehaussé d'une frise de grecques, la coupe portant la marque à six caractères de l'empereur Jiaqing en rouge de fer sur une ligne et dans un cartouche ; accident à la partie centrale de l'un

Condition

The rim of the central part of one candlestick has been broken and re glued (a long c-shape section 13 x 4 cm with an adjacent chip broken in two sections, 1,5 x 4,2 cm and a 3 x 2,5 cm pronged crack extending beneath). A resulting flake/loss of enamel on a 1,5 cm x 0,9 mm section inside; the other candlestick is in good condition.

Catalogue Note

See a similar candlestick from the Jiaqing period but on white ground sold at Christie's Paris, 21 November 2008, lot 85 and a pair of 'bajixiang' candlesticks slightly higher and on yellow ground from the Qianlong period sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 8 April 2007, lot 515.

Altarware of this decoration on colour-ground were made first during Qianlong reign but were much desired and copied during Jiaqing and Daoguang's reigns : see a Jiaqing five-piece altar set that includes a pair of candlesticks, in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in The Official Kiln Porcelain of the Chinese Qing Dynasty, Shanghai, 2003, pl. 374
