Catalogue Note
Utilisés dans le Sud de Malakula lors des cycles rituels nalawan, les masques-coiffes faits de fougère arborescente et surmodelés avec une pâte en fibres végétales sont rares, la plupart étant détruits à l'issue des cérémonies (Huffman in RMN, 1996 : 21). La créativité des expressions individuelles, confinant ici au surréalisme avec la tête Janus auréolée de quatre bras/pétales -, et la dimension picturale du décor polychrome, ne pouvait que séduire André Breton.
