Catalogue Note
Les crochets samban surmontés d'une figure masculine se rencontrent dans toute l'aire Iatmul (Moyen Sepik). Les plus élaborés, comme ici, sont conservés dans la maison cérémonielle des hommes, afin d'y suspendre des sacs contenant les objets importants du clan ou des offrandes présentées à chaque ancêtre. Celui-ci se distingue par les larges motifs champlevés envahissant le front, renforçant l'intensité de l'expression; la puissance des traits accentuée par la patine sombre, profonde, la surface animée par les traces laissées par les outils de pierre.
