Dans l'iconographie des plateaux de divination opon ifa, seul le visage d'Esu - gardien des pratiques rituelles - constitue un élément requis. Il s'impose ici comme motif central de la frise - positionné par le prêtre de sorte à lui faire face durant la consultation. Par l'étroite imbrication des motifs auxiliaires émergeant en très haut relief et envahissant la frise - poisson silure, crabe, crocodile -, le sculpteur est parvenu à traduire visuellement cette région intermédiaire qu'ils symbolisent, où les deux royaumes - humain et divin - se rejoignent.
