Parmi les plus célèbres collections constituées à l'époque de l'entre-deux-guerres s'impose celle d'Helena Rubinstein, Princesse Gourielli, partageant sa vie entre Paris et New York. Son conseiller artistique, le docteur et écrivain Paul Chadourne parvint à convaincre Frédéric H. Lem de lui céder son éblouissante collection d'art d'Afrique de l'Ouest, dont la plupart des œuvres - incluant ce masque kpelie - intégrèrent la collection emblématique d'Helena Rubinstein.
