Condition
Good condition overall; wear consistent with age and use within the culture. An old repair with staples on the proper left side of the head. Encrusted patination the top of the head, and overall thick reddish-brown patina, with dryer lighter area at the base of the head-dress. Some wear to the edges.

Catalogue Note
Reconnu comme le plus remarquable du corpus, ce masque s'impose par la puissance magistrale de son esthétique. A la force de ses volumes géométriques s'ajoute la violente dynamique de la mâchoire s'élargissant à mesure qu'elle se projette dans l'espace. La perspective s'accentue dans le mouvement des cornes recourbées l'une vers l'autre, concentrant l'impact visuel dans le champ clos des masses sculpturales.
Considéré comme violent et dangereux, il manifestait, lors des funérailles d'un membre du lignage, la présence du génie tutélaire vara (Kerchache, Paudrat, Stephan, 1988 : 527). Au sommet, l'épaisse croûte sacrificielle rappelle la puissance dont il était investi.
