Catalogue Note

Kota-Shamaye reliquary figure, Gabon

'The Guerre collection was the first and the most important representative gathering of objects from Gabon. [Léonce and Pierre] have selected, over a few decades, only the best and most original pieces' Louis Perrois, 1996

Located at the confluence between the styles of Shamaye and North Obamba  – occupying the lower valley of the Sebe – this rare reliquary figure depicts a perfect morphological transition between the foliaceous faces of the bwété Mahongwé sculptures and those of the mbulu ngulu, the classic sculpture of High Ogooué, an oval face decorated with strips of coated brass.

The dynamic of stretched the neck responds to the visual tension of the opposing density and the remarkable volumes of the head, with clean lines running from the base, conceived as its double negative. Highlighted by the enveloping headdress, sculpted in recess, the face imposes, in the concentration of the features and the brilliance of the bone pupils, a striking intensity of expression.

cf. Sotheby's (New York, 17 May 2007: n° 25) and LaGamma (2007: 223, n° 58) for two stylistically comparable reliquary figures, the first from the collection of Saul and Marsha Stanoff, the second in the collection of Patrick and Béatrice Caput. cf also Dapper (2006: 90, inv. n° 6012) for another, attributed to the Kota-Shamaye, which also has strips of coated brass.
