Condition

Very good condition overall; wear consistent with age and use within the culture. Very dry wood with ridged grain, as visible in the catalogue illustration, more pronounced to the rear. A few occasional signs of light insect wear. Fine worn patina with traces of white, black and ochre pigments.

Catalogue Note

La beauté abstraite de cet ancien bouclier des peuples de la "rain forest" (nord du Queensland) relève d'un vocabulaire éminemment symbolique. Evoquant divers phénomènes issus des mondes humains et surnaturels, les motifs - plantes, arc-en-ciel, etc. - étaient associés à la terre d'origine et aux rêves de leurs propriétaires (Morphy, 1998 : 348- 351). A la différence des boucliers de danse strictement ovales et de plus petite dimension, ceux adoptant une forme légèrement excentrique, comme ici, sont identifiés comme des boucliers de guerre (Kjellgren, 2007 : 145).
