Condition
Very good condition overall; wear consistent with age and use within the culture. Fine polychrome decoration with motifs to the intact nose. Wear around the eyes, as visible in the catalogue illustration, wear to the back of the mask. Small label '411OC' on the underside of the face.

Catalogue Note
En 1951, Pierre Vérité organise à la galerie La Gentilhommière, à Paris, sa première exposition : Arts de l'Océanie. Il s'agit aussi, comme le souligne le critique d'art Frank Elgar dans la préface du catalogue, de la première exposition - dans une galerie française - entièrement dédiée aux arts d'Océanie. Ce masque monumental, d'une très grande rareté, fait partie des rares objets dont la photographie illustre le catalogue. Il sera également présenté à la galerie Leleu en 1955, où les Vérité prêtèrent une majeure partie des œuvres exposées, et à nouveau décrit comme un "grand masque évoquant un poisson-scie".
