Condition

Good condition overall; wear consistent with age and use within the culture. Right hand part of the head-dress on the top proper right head missing. Leather seat in good condition. A few brass tacks missing.

Catalogue Note

Parmi les trônes Tshokwe de petite dimension, très rares sont ceux qui, au lieu d'une sculpture massive, présentent à l'instar des grandes chaises et selon la plus ancienne tradition, une assise en peau. Inspiré d'un modèle portugais du XVIIe siècle, ce mobilier de chef "appelé chitwamo cha ngundja, ou 'tabouret recouvert d'une peau qui 'attrape celui qui s'assied', c'est-à-dire très confortable" (Wastiau, 2006 : 37), devait sa solidité à la peau, renforçant le simple assemblage par tenon et mortaise.

Symbole du pouvoir royal, les masques Cihongo dominant le panneau ajouré du dossier et ornant la traverse frontale signifient le très haut rang de son détenteur. La densité du décor gravé et clouté, et la profondeur de la patine brune accentuent l'impact visuel de cet ancien et précieux petit trône cf. Barbier-Mueller (2003 : 259) pour un trône de proportions comparables, également avec assise en peau.
