The colours are fairly accurate in the catalogue illustration although the overall tonality is lighter in the original. The work is executed on canvas and is not relined. Due to the artist process, a minor impasto located 3 cm from the upper edge and 11 cm from the left edge is only visible under close inspection. Under UV light, there is no evidence of any retouching. This work is in excellent condition.

Un destin commun lie la vie d'Andy Warhol à celle d'Alexandre Iolas, galeriste et collectionneur à qui ce Dollar Sign a été dédicacé par l'artiste.

Warhol trouve en Iolas son premier galeriste quand, en juin 1952, il lui ouvre les portes de la  Hugo Gallery à New York, dont il est le directeur à l'époque, avec l'exposition personnelle Fifteen Drawings Based on the Writings of Truman Capote. Le destin le conduira à offrir aussi à Andy Warhol sa dernière exposition organisée en janvier 1987 à Milan au Palazzo delle Stelline, confrontant les oeuvres du cycle Last Supper de Warhol avec la célèbre fresque de Leonardo de Vinci.

Entre ces deux dates, se succèdent des rapports professionnels et amicaux de plus en plus intenses, dont témoignent de fréquentes collaborations et une double série de portraits d'Alexandre Iolas réalisés par Andy Warhol en 1970 et 1974.

Intime d'un groupe d'artistes comprenant Jean Cocteau, Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso, Max Ernst et Man Ray qu'il fréquente à Paris dans les années 1930, Alexandre Iolas garde un lien étroit avec les artistes qu'il soutient par des expositions organisées après-guerre dans ses galeries d'art à New York, Paris, Genève et Milan: René Magritte, Max Ernst, Man Ray, Victor Brauner, Matta, Joseph Cornell, Yves Klein, Jean Tinguely et Takis y seront exposés.

Galeriste influent, Alexandre Iolas a apporté une contribution significative à la création d'importantes collections d'art du XXème siècle dans le monde, comme l'inégalable collection De Menil à Houston (Etats-Unis).
