Description
- Gerard van Honthorst
- Portrait of a Man in Armour, bust length, in a painted oval
- oil on canvas
- 74 x 63.7 cm.
Provenance
With Galerie Sedelmeyer, Paris (according to a wax seal on the reverse).
Condition
The actual painting is less red than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has a recent relining. No major damages are apparent. Stretcher marks are slightly visible along the upper edge. The paint layer is secure, but is a little thin in some areas, e.g. in his hair. Some small scattered retouchings can be observed in the background.
Inspection under UV light reveals a small repaired tear in the background centre right and a few additional scattered retouchings, but only a few tiny ones in the face.
The paint surface is under a fairly clear layer of varnish.
Offered in a decorative carved wood frame in good condition.
