Condition

Please note the service comprises 79 plates instead of the 80 plates listed in the printed catalogue (the total number of items is 177). There are slight variations in the colours of the pattern. Overall the service with some small chips or glaze chips to rims and edges and minor glaze hairline cracks, usual for tin-glazed ceramics. The finials of the covers with chips to the extremities. From storage parts of this service are dusty/smudgy. -Two tureens have old metal repairs (soldered rivets) to cracks (running from border through the base), the third tureen is broken and with old metal repairs and a related loss to the upper border. One cover with two branches of the lemon finial lacking, another with losses to the branches and a leaf of the finial and a crack (starting on the border as a firing crack). -The yellow clay of the five medium covers (ca. 23-23.5 cm. wide) with artichoke finials could indicate these are Makkum and not Nove. -One small side dish broken and restuck. -One Makkum-marked tureen with a loss to one handle and a hairline crack to the border. One cover with artichoke finial with a firing crack to the border extending to the center and a border crack. -One unmarked sauceboat with a chip to the upper rim. -The four large Makkum chargers: two (52.5 and 59.5 cm. wide) with glaze irregularities from firing, one (58.3 cm. wide) with a hairline crack to the border, and one (59.5 cm. wide) with a larger chip to the underside. Sizes of dishes: The 17 oval dishes comprising: one deep dish 34 cm. wide, nine 33 cm. wide, two 27.5 cm. wide and five 24.5 cm. wide. The 7 circular dishes have diameter 39-39.5 cm., the 12 dishes diameter 32-33 cm., the small circular stand 23.5 cm. diam. The 13 small side dishes: seven ca. 12 cm. diam and six ca. 15 cm. diam. Plates (79): Fourteen plates have not been fired on a triangular centre pin, but on three rim pins. These fourteen plates and circa another eleven plates have variations in colours of the pattern. It cannot be excluded that some of these might be Tichelaar replacements; although this is unlikely since the other Makkum parts are marked with crossed T's and all these plates are unmarked. The Tichelaar archives are still kept in the factory and future research could possibly retrieve the exact order for replacements or additions produced for the Italian service.
