In good condition with minor usual glaze fritting along the rims. The second dish (De Geest...) with a small glaze chip (ca. 0.4 cm. wide) to the rim.

Inscribed "Al ware de doot op de lippen, daer omme moet men geen couragie verliesen., J.Pz. Coen, 14 Mei 1623" (Even in the face of Death, one should not loose courage) and "De geest moet boven alle moeyelijckheden sweven ende geensints daer onder buygen., J.Pz.Coen, 14 Mei 1623" (The mind must float above all difficulties and not be bent by it). The mottos of Jan Pieterszoon Coen (1587-1629) were used as encouragement during WWII.
