Catalogue Note
The decoration of this service was painted around 1948 by Guill Serpenti (1906-1982), who was the head of the painting department of the Sphinx factory. For information on his life and examples of his works on canvas please see the exhibition catalogue Guill Serpenti (Maastricht 1986).
The pattern is inspired by the Italian maiolica service decorated alla frutta barocca, lot 576 in this sale.
