Catalogue Note

Illustrated on p. 271 of the printed catalogue.
Marselisborg Palace in Århus, Jutland, is the summer residence of the Royal family of Denmark. The palace, completed in 1902, was presented by the people of Denmark to Prince Christian (1870-1947) and Princess Alexandrine (1879-1952) as a wedding gift following their marriage on April 26, 1898. After King Christian X's accession to the throne in 1912 Århus became the reigning monarch's second seat after Copenhagen. The palace is named after the seventeenth century Dutch merchant Gabriel Marselis who received the Crown land in 1661 from King Frederik III.
This vase was probably produced on the occasion of the silver wedding anniversary of the royal couple in 1923. A similar shaped dated vase with royal monogram is illustrated in the Copenhagen factory catalogue of '....illustrations and descriptions of the gifts executed for the occasion of the silver wedding of Their Majesties the King and Queen of Denmark.' (no date), p. 27.
