Description

  • Gerard Hoet
  • Rinaldo and Armida
  • signed l.r.: G.Hoet.
  • oil on canvas
  • 118.5 x 96.5 cm.

Condition

The actual painting is a little more fresh in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has a stable relining. Minor stretcher marks are visible to the front. There is a small damage along the right edge to the lower right, due to bad framing. Otherwise, no major damages are apparent. Some minor scattered retouchings are visible to the naked eye, e.g. in the red cape, in the trees and in the lower foreground. The paint surface is under a fairly clearly varnish. Inspection under UV light reveals additional retouchings along the edges, and one restored horizontal scratch of approx. 20 cm. to the upper centre, and two other vertical restored creases in the upper left corner. Some additional small scattered retouchings are also revealed, but overall, the figures are nicely preserved. Offered in a plain black wood frame with a gilt fillet.
