Description
- A Roman Mosaic Emblema Panel
- Marble
- 15 1/2 by 23 3/4 in. (without frame) 39.4 by 60.3 cm.
in opus vermiculatum, depicting in multi-colored tesserae a harbor scene, with erotes riding dolphins and fishing from the shore, an amphora lying below, harbor buildings in the background, the porphyry frame probably a 19th or early 20th century addition.
Provenance
acquired by the current owner from an estate in Princeton, New Jersey
Condition
Tesserae embedded in layer of grout laid over a thick terracotta plaque reinforced at each end with tiles and mortar. Tesserae along the right side are arranged in a more haphazard way than on the rest of the panel, suggesting extensive restoration in this area. Other smaller patches of restoration have to be assumed. A few tesserae missing here and there. Veneered red porphyry frame most likely a later addition.
