Description

  • Two Greek Terracotta Figurines
  • Terracotta
  • Heights 3 1/2 and 6 in. 8.9 an 15.2 cm.
comprising a Mycenaean figure of a bull or ox with inward-curving horns and tail, decorated in black with wavy lines on the body and straight bands on the head and legs, and a Boeotian figure of a goddess with diminutive arms and elongated neck, and wearing a long peplos flaring at the feet and decorated on the overfold with a band of latticework, her applied tripartite coiffure falling onto the shoulders and the nape of the neck and surmounted by a low polos with volute in front, voluted curls escaping below the temples, the details painted in black.

Condition

The bull is repaired from 6 fragments with some small fills along the break-lines, and a small area of restoration at the foot of the proper left foreleg. The goddess has a restored proper right arm and an area of fill at the bottom of the drapery in front; there is a neat repair across the neck and the paint is worn in areas.
