Description

  • Two Greek Pottery Squat Lekythoi
  • Terracotta
  • Height 5 3/4 and 7 in. 14.6 and 17.8 cm.
comprising an Attic lekythos, attributed to the Manner of the Meidias Painter, painted with a winged youth (Eros?) holding a kithara, a maenad leaning on his shoulder, a youth seated at left, Dionysos holding a thyrsos at right, details in white, the dotted details once gilded, and an Apulian lekythos decorated with a youth advancing to right towards a woman looking back at him, details in added yellow.

Condition

The first lekythos intact except for minor chips to the rim and handle. There are minor chips and abrasions to the glaze as well as staining, especially on the white painted areas. Areas of black in-painting on the mouth. The second lekythos very good except for a large chip on one side of the foot. Two hairline cracks suggest the possibility of a minor repair in the upper mouth area. Minor nicks and abrasions.
