Description

  • Two Bronze Leonine Masks, Late Roman or Byzantine
  • Bronze and lead
  • Diameters 4 3/4 in. 12 cm.
from a chest or door, each with boldly modeled face, grooved whiskers, inserted incisors, and ribbed ring suspended from the gaping jaws, the interior filled with lead, remains of sheet copper behind.

Provenance

Estates of Audrey B. and Stephen R. Currier, acquired prior to 1967 (Sotheby's, New York, November 21st-22nd, 1985, no. 70, illus.)

Condition

Very good and as shown. The inserted upper incisors missing on one mask. One incisor on the other mask fragmentary. The attached sheet copper on the back of each mask is mostly missing and in one case crumpled. Because the interiors are filled with lead, these masks are much heavier than one would expect.
