Description

  • An Attic Black-figured Neck Amphora, attributed to the Leagros Group
  • Terracotta
  • Height 16 in. 40.6 cm.
with torus foot, triple handles, and echinus mouth, decorated on one side with Dionysos riding in a quadriga, a dancing maenad with clappers in the background, and on the other side with three komasts in lively poses, one holding a skyphos, another an oinochoe, encircling rays, festooned lotus buds, and meander above the foot, linked lotus flowers and palmettes in the handle zones, tongues on the shoulder, and linked double palmettes on the neck, the details in added red and white.

Condition

Repaired throughout from many fragments with in-painting and areas of restoration along breaklines, areas of misfiring on foot and on one lotus bud, one palmette, and lower part of Dionysos' drapery, about half of added white color has flaked off.
