Description

  • An Attic Black-figured Hydria
  • Terracotta
  • Height 12 3/4 in. 32.4 cm.
the body decorated with a warrior facing left, holding a spear and circular shield and wearing a himation and high-crested Corinthian helmet, two draped men standing on either side, one in each pair holding a spear, the scene flanked by ivy branches, rays above the foot, linked palmettes and lotus buds on the shoulder, and tongues below the neck, traces of added red.

Provenance

acquired in Rome in the early 1960s, the owners' first purchase in this collection

Condition

Repaired from several fragments with in-painting along break lines, five small losses in painted panel were also restored in painted plaster, one above knees of far left figure, three on right hand side of shield, and one between the two figures at right at hip level, minor areas of restoration below handle, various minor nicks and pitting to glaze, superficial chips along rim and foot were painted in.
