Description

  • A Campanian Red-figured Bell Krater, attributed to the Whiteface Painter
  • Terracotta
  • Height 15 in. 38.1 cm.
painted with Apollo seated under a bower of laurel trees and playing the kithara, two richly-dressed ladies flanking him, one holding a lyre, the reverse with two youths, one wearing a chlamys and carrying a flaming torch and situla, the other wearing a himation and holding a staff, meander and cross-squares below, laurel under the rim.

Condition

Inexpertly repaired with little or no attempt made at concealing joins and small losses with in-painting (except in a small area above lady standing at right on main side), underside of rim chipped in several places, area above head of Dionysos is where the smaller fragments have been reassembled in a disjointed fashion, glue smears along many of the joins, leaves of tree next to and above Dionysos are misfired, top edge of foot abraded, top of foot seems to be painted over.
