Description

  • An Attic Red-figured Hydria, attributed to the Marsyas Painter
  • Terracotta
  • Height 12 1/4 in. 31.75 cm.
painted with a seated bride arranging her hair and surrounded by three women and a man, an erote at her feet, another above her, encircling tongues above the foot and around the rim, linked palmettes in the pouring handle zone, dotted necklace around the neck, the details in added white and yellow.

Condition

One handle entirely restored and now slightly loose, restoration of handle extends over small area of drapery belonging to figure standing at far left of group, the other handle probably partially restored; several details added in relief, such as jewelry, are now lost or fragmentary, foot with minor chips around perimeter and small repair, small chip on top of rim, thick layer of white incrustation remaining under foot and underneath overhanging rim.

Catalogue Note

This is the only known hydria by the Marsyas Painter. With his few other vases (in Saint Petersburg, Athens and London), they form a group which, according to John. D. Beazley, "includes most of the masterpieces of Attic fourth-century vase-painting" (Beazley, op. cit, 1963, p. 1475).
