Description

  • A Marble Herm Head of Dionysos, Roman Imperial
  • Marble
  • Height 10 in. 25.4 cm.
in archaistic style, with divided pointed beard, mustache with voluted ends, smiling mouth, and almond-shaped eyes, his long hair arranged in two rows of spiral curls over the forehead and bound in a fragmentary wreath of ivy leaves and berries, long locks falling over the shoulders.

Provenance

Dayton Art Institute, Dayton, Ohio, acquired in 1929 (Parke Bernet Galleries, New York, November 5th, 1971, no. 289, illus.)

Condition

As shown, tip of beard and part of base were broken off and repaired with one small fragment missing, note large chips off front of base, ends of fillet, area of proprer right ear, nose, and proper right side of wreath, back in good condition , surface slightly weathered overall, there is an ancient hole on proper right side of head which might have been meant for insertion of a now lost attribute, accession number of Dayton Art Institute (29.6) is painted in red and flaking at bottom of base in back.
