Ida Rubinstein approached Arthur Honegger to request a score for Un Miracle de Notre Dame, L'Imperatrice aux Rochers, a libretto based on medieval mystery plays. Honegger wrote an immense score of incidental music with 26 numbers, which was later cut down for its first performance at the Opéra Russe in Paris, 1927.
