Catalogue Note

To be sold with a group of 65 pieces of ballet ephemera, including tracings, reproductions and pencil sketches by unidentified hands

Benois spent much of the summer of 1914 in the south of France with Maurice Ravel, 'a magnificent composer and a charming man'. They would take long walks together on the beach near Ravel's house at St. Jean-de-luz, working on ideas for a Spanish-themed ballet which they hoped to stage - a plan thwarted by the outbreak of the First World War.
