Catalogue Note

Benois was six when he first met his future wife at the wedding of his elder brother and her sister at St. Catherine's church. 'I remember, amidst the crowd of grown-ups, a little girl in white, with a white ribbon in her dark hair, a very shy and self-conscious little girl. It was Atia." (A.Benois, Memoirs: vol II, London: Chatto & Windus, 1964 p.11).
