Catalogue Note

According to the descendants of the Lords, it is likely that Peale was commissioned to paint these two portraits by their son Eleazar.  Eleazar Lord (1788-1871), an accomplished scholar, highly successful businessman and well-known philanthropist, was both a founder and the first, third and seventh president of the Erie Railroad.
