Catalogue Note

Female figures in various stages of womanhood are particularly prevalent in Jalisco and the San Sebastián region of Nayarit. The sculptures reference ancient mythology and "become part of a hierophany, manifesting archetypal principles that reach back to the immemorial universal idea of the earth as a goddess." (Townsend 1998:123).
