Description

  • clay
the deeply rounded bowl depicting a ritual scene, with six pairs of male and female figures standing on the rim with arms reaching to each others lower backs, peering down onto the confronted figures perhaps about to fight, each with arms raised, each figure with distinct large nose, double-punctate eyes, ear ornaments and coiffure rising into a central top knot.

Provenance

The Merrin Gallery, New York

New York Private Collection, acquired from the above in 1985, (Sotheby's, New York,  May 17, 2000, lot 99)

Condition

Excellent, all figures appear intact except for the reglued original head of one central figure. Old crack on the underside, appears stable. Very nice surface root marks, and good modeling overall.

Catalogue Note

This  finely modeled vessel creates a lattice-like rim with  the well spaced intertwined figures. It is an unusual example of the anecdotal scenes from West Mexico, which include house models, ball games volador and  village feasts. See Townsend (1998:pl 140, figs. 3 and 4)  for the general type.
