the deep ritual container finely carved with a thin four-part flange  incised as a stylized bird encircling the perimeter, the head with long curving beak incorporating an openwork mat motif, the symbol of rulership; supported on cylindrical tetrapod feet, in translucent white marble.

Condition

Excellent condition. No breaks or repairs; stone has darker vein and slight erosion on perimeter of flange of one wing.

Catalogue Note

The Izapa style of the Pacific slope region features fluid scrollwork and flat relief carving. The region was a powerful polity of the Late Preclassic, influencing Olmec centers to the north.
