Description
- SAMUEL MARX
- A Fine and Rare Pair of Side Tables
parchment over wood and painted metal
Provenance
Liz O'Brien, New York
Literature
Liz O'Brien, Ultramodern Samuel Marx: Architect, Designer, Art Collector, New York, 2007, p. 133 (for related designs executed in parchment for a ladies dressing room)
Condition
Overall good condition. Color and age is consistent between the two pieces. Each of the case elements show gentle use with areas of overpainting to top and legs. The painted portion of the top with rubbing and losses consistent with age and use. The surfaces are not even worn across the various inlays. Both show minor seam separations to the applied parchment surface and minor lifting at scattered corners. With very slight surface scratches and nicks to the surfaces throughout. One of the side tables showing evidence of prior restoration. With a minor area of infill measuring approximately one inch in length to the proper left of the side of the drawers. The bottom drawer on the same table showing a minor restored loss to the proper right lower corner. Both of the restorations have been sensitively undertaken and have little impact on the overall presence of the piece. The painting to the hardware is possibly later, with light wear and rubbing, and overpainting is possibly later.
