Ming Fay was born in Shanghai in 1943, raised in Hong Kong and studied and lived in the United States. Known for his magical, surrealist paper sculptures, Ming Fay challenges the viewer's inertia; the enlargement of a fruit from everyday life becomes the subject of his creation. Nectarine (Lot 670) is representative of this and also conveys Ming Fay's interest and exploration into the origins of Chinese folk art.  In Chinese folk art, peaches and nectarines are used as auspicious symbols, representing long life. Enlarged beyond life-size, Nectarine expresses the natural abundance of nature and guides the viewer into a fantasy world, dazzled by the work's rich surface colour. From 1985 to the present day, his work has been repeatedly exhibited by galleries and museums in the United States and China and Ming Fay's works are held by public collections in both New York and Philadelphia.
