Provenance

Redfern Gallery, London, where acquired by the present owner 25th January 1982

Condition

Original canvas. There is a small repaired tear in the lower right quadrant. A small white patch on the reverse corresponds to the tear. There is an indentation to the tree trunk in the lower left quadrant, with some corresponding lifting paint and a few tiny flecks of paint loss. There is a stretcher bar mark, a corresponding line of craquelure and a few tiny spots of lifting paint along the lower edge. There is also some frame abrasion to the lower edge. There is a diagonal line of faint staining in the lower right quadrant, the surface is dirty and the varnish has discoloured in places. Ultraviolet light reveals flecks of retouching in lower right quadrant and an uneven varnish, which makes the reading difficult to interpret. Held in a gilt plaster frame.
