Condition

Original canvas. There is a patch visible on the reverse which corresponds to a 2 inch repaired tear just left of the centre near the lower edge. The canvas is undulating in the upper left corner. There are artist's pinholes in the corners and an additional pinhole along the right edge in the lower right quadrant. There is an additional pinhole to the aforementioned repair. There are a few scattered, isolated lines of craquelure, primarily to the centre of the composition, only visible upon close inspection. The surface is dirty and may benefit from a light clean. Otherwise, the work is in generally good overall condition with areas of strong impasto. Ultraviolet light reveals a spot of retouching which corresponds to the aforementioned tear. Otherwise, there are pigments that fluoresce but these appear to be the hand of the artist. Held in a painted plaster frame. Please telephone the department on 020 7293 6424 if you have any questions regarding the present work.
