Condition

Original canvas. It undulates very slightly in each corner. There is a 1.5cm. protrusion with resulant tearing of the canvas and paint loss in the yellow pigment near the centre of the right edge, where the canvas has been impacted from the reverse. There are two very small areas of paint loss in the orange pigment of the lower left quadrant. There is a spot of surface dirt in the yellow pigment near the upper left corner and some minor areas of paint separation in the upper left quadrant. There are few isolated spots of staining and surface matter across the canvas. Under ultraviolet light there appear to be no signs of retouching. Held in a gilt composition frame with a canvas inset. The present work is related to an etching, which Richards executed in 1955 (see Roberto Sanesi, The Graphic Works of Ceri Richards, Fracchia, Milan, 1973, p.65), as well a slightly larger oil (1955, The National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa), both of the same title.
