the table top centered by the Dove of Pliny surrounded by eight panels depicting the Pantheon, St. Peter's Square, the Temple of Vesta, the Arch of Janus Quadrifrons, St. Angel Castle and the Bridge, the Campidoglio, the Colosseum and the Arch of Titus with a malachite border. (see sothebys.com for an illustration of the base)

Condition

Overall in its original condition. The top with its original base with the usual minor scratches, dents and nicks to gilding and carcass consistent with age and use. Also with losses to acanthus leaf tips and all paw feet. The micromosaic with the expected hairline cracks in places now filled with dirt. Please note that this micromosaic top was once cracked from one side to the other. We do not believe that it had been separated into two parts, as we do not see replacements to tessarae along the cracks on both sides. One can, however, notice a hairline crack throughout. This is why the top has been backed by the later addition of a plaster plate, now painted in black.
