Catalogue Note

Jean-Louis Grégoire was the son of a ciseleur, which perhaps accounts for the high quality chiseled finish of his bronze figures. He started to exhibit at the Salon in 1867. His most well-known works include L'Allegro, Mozart infant, and Perseus and Andromeda. The present group depicts the romance between Romeo and Juliet, drawn from the 1597 Shakespear quarto.

While this model is rarely offered for sale at auction, a similar group of the same height was sold in these rooms, November 22, 2005, lot 125 for $ 36,000
