the top and side mounted with Sèvres style porcelain plaques, decorated with floral bouquets, the hinged top opens to a cushioned claret velvet interior compartment above two long and two short similarly treated drawers, the fall front slant fitted with a gilt-tooled green leather writing surface, one mount has been removed to reveal the mark P.E.G. and workshop numbers

Overall in good condition. Retains original gilding with some rubbing and tarnishing in places. The claret velvet material replaced at some stage. The porcelain plaques in good condition. There are green oxidation points of the right side of the front right support. The veneers with craquelure, consistent with carcass shrinking.

The impressed markings of P.E.G. refer to P.E. Guerin, maker of fine metalwork furniture mounts.  The French born Pierre Emmanuel Guerin founded his firm in New York City in 1857, and it has remained at its location on Jane Street in Greenwich Village since 1892.  While generally associated with fine furniture makers based in New York in the last quarter of the nineteenth century, P.E. Guerin mounts are sometimes found on European furniture of the period as well.
