Catalogue Note
Canova's Venus Italica replaced the Medici Venus after it had been forcibly removed from the Tribuna of the Uffizi by Napoleonic forces. Despite originally being asked to sculpt a copy after the antique, Canova submitted what Hugh Honour has described as, 'a wholly original figure'. Canova's Venus references the Medici Venus in the turn of the neck, but is stooped, bringing the Venus' head into proportion with the rest of her body, and incorporates drapery, partly concealing her nakedness.
