Condition

The painting has been re-lined using wax as an adhesive. The surface is stable. The paint layer appears to be mostly clean, although remnants of old varnish still exist around the edges and in a few spots in the sky. Care should be taken if further cleaning is attempted since Schreyer's technique is rather glaze-oriented and abrasion can very often occur quickly in the darker colours. Under ultraviolet light some colours fluoresce slightly stronger than others yet there has been little, if any restoration. Although slight strengthening may have occurred in the darker colours of the horses, this could also be the original glazes. The painting is therefore in good overall condition and ready to be hung in its current state.
