Condition

The canvas has been relined. There is a vertical canvas join running through the height of the composition in the centre, visible to the naked eye. Elsewhere there are scattered spots of retouching (visible under ultraviolet light), notably to a repaired 6 by 4cm puncture to the right of the Süleymaniye Mosque. The painting is clean and ready to hang. Held in a simple gold painted wood and plaster frame.

Catalogue Note

This impressive view from the heights of Beyazit (today occupied by Istanbul Universtiy) takes in most of Constantinople's most famous landmarks. From left to right can be seen the Süleymaniye Mosque, the Galata Tower, the New Mosque at the near end of the Galata Bridge, Topkapi, and the Haghia Sophia.
