There are scattered spots of retouching visible under ultraviolet light in both works, notably to a possible 4cm retouched tear in the sheet (left of the bearded man) and strokes to the back and hands of the farmer with the pipe. There are a few scattered small spots of paint flaking (visible in the catalogue illustration), notably above left of the hat of the bearded man and spots to the left of the farmer with the pipe, and slight yellowing of the varnish in both works. Each held in a plain mock-ebony carved wood frame with a gold-painted inner accent.
