Catalogue Note

It is yet to be determined precisely which of the Rothschild family sat for this portrait in 1903. Boldini deftly captured the personality of his distinguished sitter but the bearded and bespectacled figure resembles many of the family patriarchs at the turn of the century such as Gustave de Rothschild (1829-1911) or Edmund de Rothschild (1845-1934).  Edmund's son, Baron Maurice de Rothschild (1881-1957), assembled a remarkable collection of Boldini's portraits including Portrait of Giovinetta Errazuriz which sold for a world record price in these rooms in November 2010.
