Condition

Overall the condition of the piece is excellent, with some minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is some dirt and black spotting to the base of the bronze and a few chips to the edges of the marble base.

Catalogue Note

The present bronze is remarkable for its vivid, contrasting coloured patinas and impressive red veined marble base with wood pedestal. This approach to colour lends to the piece a sense of exoticism and is typical of the most engaging orientalist sculpture.

Émile-Edmond Peynot studied under Jouffroy and Robinet and exhibited at the Salon from 1873. He won the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1880 as well as gold medals at the Expositions Universelles of 1889 and 1900. Peynot was awarded the Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur in 1891, becoming an Officier in 1903.
